Tailteann Cup: Offaly advance to semis after win over New York
Impressive Offaly produced a solid performance to beat New York on a score-line of 3-17 to 0-11 to progress to the Tailteann Cup semi-final in Bord Na Mona O’Connor Park in Tullamore on Saturday afternoon.
New York flew to Ireland looking for their first Championship victory but the challenge would prove too much for a side that lacked competitive action. They did however show that they carry some scoring threat and are not far away from causing an upset in the coming years.
Corner forward Jack Bryant got the scoring underway for Offaly with a well-taken snapshot after just three minutes. New York responded quickly through Jack Reilly to level the game.
This was the last time we saw the game level. A brace of quick frees from Niall McNamee put Offaly into a two-point lead just coming up to the 10-minute mark in the match.
Offaly threatened to pull away from here with Keith O’Neill pointing from play followed by another set of frees from McNamee bringing his tally to four points and putting the Faithful men well in control with a seven-point lead after 17 minutes.
New York finally came into the game from here as Galway native Adrian Varley pointed a minute later, his first and the Bronx men’s second. Moloney got a point from play for Offaly but it did not stem the momentum of the New York team.
Jack Reilly burst into life in the forward line for the Americans with three points in six minutes from play, two from play, and one from a free keeping them in touch. Paddy Dunican came forward from his net for Offaly to point from range to keep New York at arm's length.
Quick-fire scoring from Offaly just before halftime put this game to bed though. Niall Darby with a long-range score coming up from corner back and a left-footed free, either side of a Ruairi McNamee point pulled the Faithful lead eight points.
The killer blow came into additional time in the first half when some fantastic passing from the Offaly forward line split the New York defence apart leaving Anton Sullivan to bury the ball into the back of Cunninghams' net, extending the Offaly lead to eleven points at half time on a scoreline of Offaly 2-10 New York 0-5.
This momentum continued through to the second half as Offaly scored four points in the opening six minutes from both McNamee’s, Flynn, and O’Neill to extend their lead even further.
John Maughan saw the opportunity to run the bench at this point with a few early changes for his Offaly side. New York continued to show fight with another burst of scoring though but this game proved to be a step too far for a team who have some talented players in their ranks.
At the 50-minute mark, Offaly made sure this game was over with quick scoring of 1-2 in just five minutes. Cathal Flynn fisted the ball home after more fantastic passing from his teammates split an already tired New York defence.
A whole host of subs for both sides saw this game peter out for the majority of the second half. Another late flurry of points from New York kept the scoreline looking respectable from their point of view but the challenge was just too big for the American side.
Substitute Jack McEvoy fisted over the bar in additional time for the Faithful to finish the scoring for the day.
Offaly move on to a Tailteann Cup Semi-Final in two weeks' time against either Carlow or Westmeath.
