Leinster SFC: Five goals for Louth the difference over Carlow

Goals from Conor Grimes, Ciaran Byrne, Tommy Durnin and Sam Mulroy helped Louth reach the Quarter Finals, of the Leinster Senior Football Championship, after a 5-10 to 0-10 win over Carlow.

Two goals in the first and three in the second was enough for a five star display to set up a meeting with Kildare in the quarter final, an easy performance in the end for Mickey Harte’s troops, continuing their form for the league campaign.

Mulroy was the top scorer across the leagues earlier in the year, finishing with 2-5 as he continued his fine form in the half forward line.

Louth dominated the opening half of football with Grimes and Byrne both raising the green flag, as Carlow struggled to contain a strong attacking outfit from the Wee County,

Sam Mulroy kicked two early frees to give Louth a two point advantage after seven minutes, before Conor Early added a third a minute later, with Carlow struggling to get a foot in the tie early on.

It took 12 minutes for them to get on the board, Josh Moore opening their account with a well taken effort, the score would be cancelled out by Ciaran Downey as he added two quick points to extend their lead to four, but just after the Carlow kickout Conor Grimes hit the back of the net with a lovely strike as Louth were in the driving seat, ahead 1-5 to 0-1.

Niall Hickey and Daragh Foley got two quick scores to reduce the deficit, but moments later Louth went up the field from their kick out and Ciaran Byrne found the back of the net, a beautifly hit side footed strike which gave Louth a 2-5 to 0-3 lead after 26 minutes.

Foley and Jamie Clarke both scored free’s for Carlow to leave two clear goals between them after 33 minutes, but Grimes pointed the final score of the half as they took a seven point lead to the interval.

The second half read the same as the opening half script, goals on the mind of Louth as Durnin and a brace by Mulroy, making it an exhibition performance in the second 35 minutes.

Both exchanged points early in the half but it was Durnin’s goal that was the killer blow coming in the 49th minute, leading 3-7 to 0-6 they had breathing room as Foley and Dunphy added scores to try to bring Carlow back.

Durnin added a point before Mulroy got his first goal of the half, well taken in the 61st minute, as they now had a 12 point advantage, seven minutes later Mulroy had his second this time converting from the penalty spot, as many of the Carlow faithful had already went out the exit gates.

Colm Hulton and Dunphy kicked consolation scores in injury time, but two more scorers by Mulory, the latter a 45', served as the final action of the contest, a comfortable 15 point win for the Division 3 champions.
