Fitzpatrick inspires Aughansheelin to Intermediate success

Aughansheelin are the 2022 Smith Monumentals Intermediate Champions, after defeating Annaduff in a nail-biting final in Pairc Sean this afternoon.

Fintan Fitzpatrick kicked 0-6 for the afternoon, as both ended up playing with 14 men toward the latter stages, plenty of wides by both teams, Aughnasheelin finishing with seven while Annaduff had six.

Aughnasheelin were wayward at the start of the tie, three wides inside seven minutes, Fintan Fitzpatrick did claim a great mark before getting their opening score after five minutes.

Sean McNabola levelled the tie after eight minutes, Adam O'Hagan had a goal chance that went wide as they came close to pulling ahead.

Sean McWeeney landed a 45 after 12 minutes to give Aughnasheelin the lead once more, before Kenny Cox hit the net for Annaduff after 14 minutes, 1-1 to 0-2.

Fitzpatrick added three points in succession, with Gavin Sammon also notching from play to put Aughnasheelin back in the driving seat 0-6 to 1-1.

McBabola added his second point after 26 minutes, Annaduff with two late chances that they squandered with Aughnasheelin ahead 0-6 to 1-2 at the interval.

Ciarán Cullen was quick to make it a two point game with a point a minute after the restart, but Jack Hughes and Alan Clancy reduced the arrears by the 44th minute, despite having Sean McNabola black carded after 38 minutes.

Fitzpatrick landed another free to put Aughansheelin back ahead at the end of the third quarter, both hhe and Cormac Sammon added points from play to make it 0-10 to 1-4 with ten minutes left to play.

It was a case of DeJa'Vu as Aughnasheelin kicked three wides in the later stages of the half, their seventh wide of the afternoon.

Both finished with 14 men as Dillon Kane was sent off after 57 minutes for Annaduff while Aaron Hoare was black carded after 59 minutes.
