Match Report

Drumkeerin secure home win against Mohill

Drumkeerin recorded their first win of this year's championship with a three point win over Mohill on Saturday last. With both sides losing their first round games with heavy defeats, a lot was at stake here with a win for either side vital to stay in the races for a knockout place and of course to avoid a relegation battle.

The home team led 0-4 to 0-3 after twelve minutes, their points coming from Tommy Rogan, Cathal McCawley, James Gallagher (Creevelea) and Jerome Maguire with Ronan Kennedy hitting all three points for Mohill.

The eventual winners had their best spell of the game in the next ten minutes, hitting four points without reply, Francie Davitt and Cathal McCawley with two each to open up a five point gap.

But Mohill stayed in touch, Jamie Cosgrove and Kennedy with points, Davitt with another for the winners to leave four points between the teams at the break.

Jerome Maguire opened the scoring in the second half with a point and it took another ten minutes for the next score, a point for James Gallagher (Corry) to leave six points between the teams.

It looked like the home team would build on that lead and go on to win the game comfortably but nothing could be further from the truth; Mohill had a great ten minute spell, hitting four points from frees, all from the boot of Kennedy, with just a single point in reply from McCawley to leave just three points between the sides.

Tommy Rogan eased the pressure a little for his team with his second point of the game but again Kennedy with a “45” left it a three point game.

A Davitt free again eased the pressure for the home team but that man Kennedy kept his team in touch with his tenth point of the game to leave a nervous last few minutes for Drumkeerin.

They held out for victory, an important one at that but will need to up their performance if they hope for Championship honours.

After a heavy home defeat to Ballinaglera, Mohill put in a much improved performance and were very much in the game up to the final whistle.
