Match Report

Clinical Annaduff see off Drumreilly at Stanley Cox Park

A flurry of goals for Annaduff helped defeat Drumreilly in Round 1 of the Leitrim Intermediate Football Championship. A second-half tour de force, in which they scored 3-7 to the visitors 0-6, saw Annaduff see off Drumreilly comfortably in this first round intermediate football championship match played in glorious conditions.

Full forward Jason Ward hit two second-half goals from play and Sean Duignan chipped in with another to put the game beyond the reach of a hard-working Drumreilly team featuring Leitrim stars of yesteryear in John McKeon, Ollie Maguire, Declan Maxwell and James Holohan.

Drumreilly got off to the brighter start and led by 0-4 to 0-0 after 13 minutes with three points from Conor Gaffney and a spectacular James Holohan effort from along the endline. Eoin Gill got Annaduff off the mark in the 13th minute with a great point from play and Sean McNabola’s free left two between the teams at the water break.

After the water break McNabola added another two points for Annaduff and Conor Gaffney kept the visitors ahead with a score from a free. The game was turned on its head just before halftime when the Drumreilly defence was turned over when there didn’t look to be any great danger and midfielder Daniel Bosquette raced through to slot the ball, soccer style, past the advancing Damon Maguire in the Drumreilly goal to leave the home team leading by 1-5 to 0-5 at the half time interval.

Two early second-half points from right-half forward Adam O’Hagan increased the home team’s lead and when Jason Ward finished to the net in the ninth minute, the game was as good as over.

Sean Duignan added a third Annaduff goal with halftime substitute Kenny Cox causing havoc in the Drumreilly defence. Further points from Conor Gaffney, Graham Taylor and two from Nigel Maguire were no more than the visitors deserved and Ward got his second before the end to put the seal on a well-deserved victory for Annaduff whose pace and power Drumreilly found hard to contend with in the second half.
