Tyrone advance to Ulster quarter-finals
Tyrone booked their place in the quarter finals of the Ulster Senior Football Championship after a 2-17 to 2-10 victory over Fermanagh at Brewster Park.
The Red Hands survived a late flurry of goals from Kieran Donnelly's side to seal a valuable win on the road.
Tyrone was dealt a blow early on when Michael O’Neill was black carded after just over 60 seconds. Despite this, Tyrone took the lead through a Darragh Canavan point.
Fermanagh replied through a couple of points from Sean Guigley but their lead was short lived when Niall Sludden slotted over a fine score.
The Ernesiders should have found the first goal of the game when Conall Jones raced through on goal. Thankfully for Tyrone, Jones' effort went high and over the bar.
Ryan Lyons was in fantastic form for the hosts and linked up excellently with Darragh McGurn inside the first half. The Fermanagh wing forward found two points in quick succession to give his side a three-point lead midway through the first half.
The dangerous Darren McCurry found his free scoring form of the league campaign and added two points off his left boot to reduce the deficit.
James McMahon and McCurry traded points towards the latter stages of the half before Tyrone took the lead through a wonderful solo goal from Conor Meyler.
Ryan Lyons equalised for the Division 3 side just before the break, but Cathal McShane had the final say with a point with the last kick of the first period, giving Tyrone a one-point lead at half time.
Darragh McGurn put Fermanagh level after the first minute of the half, but Tyrone stepped up a gear and the introduction of Conor McKenna proved vital.
McGeary and McCurry added a string of points before Con Kilpatrick and Brian Kennedy stretched their lead even more.
Conor McKenna’s pace caused the Fermanagh defence trouble, and it was a piece of individual brilliance that resulted in his side’s second goal.
McKenna broke through the defence before unleashing a rocket against the post. The ball bounced off the up right and into the path of Liam Rafferty who finished from point blank range.
Fermanagh looked to be tiring leading to more Tyrone scores courtesy of Cathal McShane and Conor McKenna, but Fermanagh fought back in the final ten minutes.
Josh Largo Ellis scored a wonderful goal inside the last five minutes before Conall Jones scored just minutes later to bring the game to within seven points.
Sadly, the game ended with some ugly scenes in front of the Fermanagh goal with a number of players from both sides getting involved in an off the ball incident.
Conor McKenna was shown a straight red card giving Tyrone a huge problem heading into their quarter final clash with Derry.
