Match Report
Rebels go marching on
Cork reached the All-Ireland quarter finals with a hard-fought five-point win over Limerick today at Páirc Uí Caoimh after an action-packed Munster-derby.
Limerick were the better side in the first-half but Stephen Sherlock’s six points left Cork a point ahead at the break. Gordan Brown’s second-half black card opened the game up for the Rebels and as Cathal O’Mahony scored afterwards it looked like Limerick were down an out.
The Treaty fought back however as Brian Donovan scored and Paul Walsh was sent off for the hosts. However a Brian Hurley penalty put Cork back in control and they saw out the win.
John Cleary’s men advance in another All-Ireland qualifier but once again it wasn’t convincing and Billy Lee’s side pushed them all the way and in every aspect. Cork were overly passive in the first-half and it felt like Limerick’s day but fatigue and an untimely black card proved costly.
In the early stages Limerick were cutting through their opponents with ease who took a deep defensive approach and seemed to offer them too much space in midfield. They made the most of this to an extent with early scores from Adrian Enright, Gordon Brown and Robbie Bourke, however they also missed a number of easy wides.
Meanwhile Stephen Sherlock carried the home threat on his back with six first-half scores. A Cian Sheehan point had Lee’s men level on 33 minutes but the final Sherlock score had Cork leading 0-8 to 0-7 at the interval.
It was a positive start to the second period for Limerick as Hugh Bourke got two scores but Cork can be praised for the way they smartly switched it on when Gordon Brown received a black for a third man challenge. That 10 minute phase proved to be crucial as Cork scored 1-03 and the away team had nothing to respond with.
Youngster Cathal O’Mahony scored a brilliant goal after a drive into the box and Brian Hurley and John O’Rourke scores gave the hosts their first commendable gap as tiredness crept into the Limerick players. It was Brown himself who returned to the fray to kick Limerick’s next score.
It felt Cork’s experience would make it plain-sailing from here but a Brian Donovan goal in the 59th minute for the Treaty County followed by Paul Walsh’s subsequent sending off turned this tie on its head again. Walsh was zealous in the way he fouled and received two yellows in quick succession.
However Kevin O’Donovan’s run on goal ended with him being pulled down and Captain Hurley converted the penalty on 66 minutes as Cork regained control. This shift had taken its toll on Limerick and Cork saw things out.
Sherlock was a standout with eight points for the second game running but Cork didn’t make it easy for themselves and will probably be the favourable draw in the last eight.

We're underway here in this Munster-derby!
A late change from John Cleary sees Míchéal Martin come back into goals for Cork in place of Chris Kelly. Billy Lee has made several changes to the Limerick team as Gordon Brown and Padraig De Bruin come in for Paul Maher and James Naughton. Josh Ryan is dropped to the bench in what might be connected to the knock he carried into the Munster final. Robbie Bourke replaces the full-forward.
The winners enter the draw for the Sam Maguire quarter-finals with the four provincial champions Dublin, Kerry, Derry and Galway. Also joining that draw from the back-door qualifiers will be Clare, Mayo and the winner of Armagh and Donegal later this afternoon.
The Rebels defeated Louth last week in Round 1 so find themselves one win away from the last eight of the All-Ireland. The Treaty County enter this Munster-tie as provincial runners-up and will look to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Kerry in the final to famously book a spot in the last eight themselves.
