Mohill cruise to win against Gortletteragh
The reigning champions Mohill cruised to a comfortable victory over their neighbours Gortletteragh at Philly McGuinness Memorial park in a one sided Connacht Gold Senior Championship encounter on Friday evening.
The game was as good as over as a contest after fifteen minutes. Mohill had at that stage obtained the upper hand thanks to a goal after ninety seconds by Evan Harkin which was followed by a second green flag from Jack Rowley in the seventh minute.
With Domhnaill Flynn in in imperious form for victors, the Cornageeha based outfit couldn't match the intensity brought by the home team.
Playing against the wind in the opening half, Flynn got Eamonn O' Hara's team off to a flying start with a pointed free after forty seconds.
Disaster struck for Gortletteragh a minute later when Mohill corner Back Evan Harkin punished a scuffed Kick out by firing to the net after latching on to a ball from Ronan Gordon.
Things got worse for the visitors in the 7th minute when Rowley finished a flowing move to the net after Mohill turned over possession in the middle of the field.
Fiachra McGuinness was in fine form in midfield and he contributed three points from play in the opening half to add to Flynn's tally of five scores and two from Ronan Gordon.
Gordon's score from play in the 23rd minute from near the sideline was arguably the score of the game when he curled the ball beautifully over the bar with his left foot.
Shane Quinn, Conor Quinn, Rowley and Keith Keegan all got on the scoreboard to leave the score 2-14 to 0-4 at the break.
Rattled by the early Mohill blitz Gortletteragh grew a little more into the game and by bringing more bodies into defensive positions they were able to slow down the Mohill scoring rate and prevent further opportunities on their goal.
They were able to rely on Brendan Naughton's accuracy from frees and he was able to slot over three points in the second quarter. Substitute Danny Liu Doyle livened things up in the attack and he pointed from play within 30 seconds of his introduction.
The same player appeared to have won his team a penalty before half time but the decision was reversed by referee Martin Feeney after a consultation with his umpire.
Gortletteragh's Barry Tiernan shot narrowly wide after intercepting a short kick out from Padraig Tighe in the Mohill goal.
The second half had little to offer as a spectacle with Mohill keeping their opponents at arm's length without ever having to over exert themselves. McGuinness added two points as well as a score each from Flynn, Evan Harkin and Conor Quinn.
Gortletteragh responded with three points from the impressive corner forward Nathan Ward, two from frees and one from a mark. Ward was the one player who caused the Mohill defence difficulties in the second half with his ball winning ability.
Gortletteragh had a Danny Liu Doyle goal ruled out late on for a square ball.
