Clare dig deep to beat Meath

Pearse Lillis’ first half goal proved to be the difference as Clare advanced to Round 2 of the All-Ireland football qualifiers. The Banner were ahead by six in the 27th minute but Meath came back at them.

Six minutes into the second half Conor McGill scored a penalty for Meath. Daithi McGowan levelled matters before the Royals went ahead in the 52nd minute through Bryan McMahon’s pointed free. David Tubridy had a penalty saved by Meath keeper Harry Hogan in the 63rd minute but late points from Keelan Sexton and Manus Doherty secured the win for Colm Collins’ men.

With just over two minutes gone on the clock Eoin Cleary kicked over the opening score. In the 13th minute Lillis put the Banner ahead by four when he flicked the ball to the net.

Meath netminder Hogan pulled off a great save to deny Lillis a second goal in the 16th minute.

Meath got their first score in the 18th minute when Thomas O’Reilly kicked over a neat point. The Banner were seven ahead in the 27th minute when Tubridy kicked over a free. Meath hit a purple patch and cut the gap to four twice as they trailed at the break 1-07 to 0-06.

Sub Joey Wallace was hauled down in the early stages of the second half and Conor McGill put away the penalty. They took the lead for the first time in the 52nd minute.

Cleary and Cillian O’Sullivan exchanged points as Meath held a one point lead entering the final 10 minutes of the game. Cleary fired over a free to draw the sides level again and in the 61st minute Clare were awarded a penalty.

Tubridy needed to change his shirt due to blood and when he came back on his spot-kick was excellently saved by Hogan.

Hogan was superb for his side and pulled off another fantastic save in the 69th minute to deny Keelan Sexton. Sexton hit over the resulting 45 to edge Clare ahead. In the third minute of stoppage time Manus Doherty got up to score a fine point to seal the win for the Banner.
