Cavan See Off London To Remain Top Of Group 1

Cavan made it two wins from two in Group 1 of the Tailteann Cup, as they overcame a valiant London side in Ruislip this afternoon.

Cavan were one of the more fancied sides coming into the beginning of the Tailteann Cup and backed up their credentials with a nine-point win over Laois in the opening round of fixtures.

The Lake County fielded the same starting 15 as last weekend and took an early lead in sunny London through Paddy Lynch who fired over a free kick in the second minute.

The home side, on the other hand, suffered a nine-point defeat to Offaly last week and were looking for a better showing in this tie. Liam Gavaghan’s point got them off the mark in the sixth minute with Josh Obahor levelling the game up a few seconds later.

The away side popped two more over the bar through Gearoid McKiernan and Lynch to go two points ahead.

A goal by Liam Gallagher saw London the lead for the first time in the game, making it 1-3 to 0-5 in the 23rd minute.

The visitors replied with points from Ryan O’Neill and Oisin Brady before Daniel Clarke pulled one back for London. Another McKiernan point proved to be the last action of the first half as the teams went in 1-4 to 0-8 at the break.

At the restart, Paddy Lynch sent two free kicks over the bar early in the second half before James Smith scored his second and Cavan’s eleventh score of the match.

The wind was certainly making the difference and Cavan capitalized on the advantage. McKiernan and Lynch again added to the scoreline before a Gavaghan free kick made it 1-5 – 0-13. The same two players put Cavan seven points up before substitute Enda Lynn smashed in a goal to make the last minutes interesting.

Unfortunately, for the home side, Cavan were able to stop them from mounting any sort of a comeback and ran down the clock with Conor Rehill scoring the last point of the game to make it London 2-6 – Cavan 0-18. Cavan now top at least for the time being
