Roundup: D3 Allianz Football League

Louth and Limerick gained promotion from Division 3 courtesy of their wins over Wicklow and Fermanagh respectively.

Longford stayed up by defeating Laois by seven points in Portlaoise. The defeat means Laois drop to Division 4 along with Wicklow.

Westmeath 1-13 Antrim 0-12

A four point win for Westmeath wasn’t enough to help them seal promotion to Division 2 as Limerick did the business at home to Fermanagh.

Poor finishing cost Antrim as Westmeath overturned a five point deficit into a three point winning margin in the second half. The Lake County were then able to push on and claim the win. It was John Heslin’s penalty that helped turn the game in Westmeath’s favour.

Antrim started well but were dealt a blow in the 12th minute when Tomas McCann was sin binned. During his absence Westmeath were able to draw level. Westmeath created some goal chances during that 10 minutes spell.

The Saffrons were ahead by four at half-time and stretched it to five just after the restart but Westmeath were back in the game through Heslin’s penalty and they were able to kick on from there.

Longford 2-17 Laois 1-13

Longford manager Billy O’Loughlin got one over his native county when Longford defeated Laois to retain their Division 3 status for the seventh successive season while relegating the O’Moore County. Longford had a poor record in Portlaoise but they put that behind them with this win.

Joseph Hagan scored 1-6 for Longford while Dessie Reynolds, who returned to the starting line-up, scored 1-2. Reynolds’ goal in the 48th minute left Laois with a mountain to climb. It was a fantastic performance from Longford who fell to a disappointing defeat to Wicklow in their previous game.

For Laois it’s Division 4 next year. They took the lead in the 12th minute when Mark Barry scored a goal. Laois were dealt a blow in the 26th minute when Sean Flynn was black carded. Two minutes later Longford got their first goal and never looked back.

Limerick 1-16 Fermanagh 0-14

Limerick were promoted to Division 2 with a five point win over Fermanagh at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Billy Lee’s side knew going into this game that a win would see them gain promotion.

Fermanagh took an early two point lead with six minutes gone on the clock. Josh Ryan kicked over Limerick’s opening point. When James Naughton kicked over a point to edge Limerick ahead it was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Josh Ryan got their goal in the 24th minute.

The lead was three at the break - 1-8 to 0-8 but Fermanagh were never allowed to get into a rhythm. The lead was extended to four in the 52nd minute. Robbie Bourke, Ryan and Tommy Griffin kicked over points to seal the win for Limerick.

Louth 2-17 Wicklow 1-13

Louth claimed back to back promotions with seven points to spare over relegated Wicklow in Aughrim. Mickey Harte’s side finish their league campaign top of Division 3, promoted and avoid playing in the Tailteann Cup.

Wicklow put it up to Louth and were ahead by one point in the 18th minute. Ciaran Downey's goal gave Louth a 1-6 to 0-7 lead going in at the break.

Kevin Quinn grabbed a goal for Wicklow to try and get them back in the game. Louth hit back with their substitutes making an impression. Tom Jackson grabbed their second goal as Louth sealed a fine win.
