Aughavas secure 2020 Leitrim Junior Championship title
A Seamus Sweeney inspired Aughavas overcame a seven point opening salvo in the first ten minutes for their neighbours Cloone to win the Vistamed Junior Football Championship nine months after the original date for the postponed game.
The game which had originally been scheduled for last October had fallen foul of the Covid restrictions imposed on Gaelic Games since late last year but it didn't disappoint as Cloone came flying out of the blocks in the opening stages. Niall Quinn struck for a goal with the opening move of the game and it seemed to shake the pre-game favourites Aughavas as they had no response to the powerful attacking moves of Cloone for the opening ten minutes, leading 1-4 to no score at that stage.
Centre forward Sweeney finally started to get a hold on the game with a double set of quick fire scores either side of a Colm Maguire point to bring Fintan McBrien & Michael Fitzpatrick's side back into the action. A Brian Mulvey point leaving Cloone one goal to the good entering the closing stages of the first half.
Match referee Mark McCloskey added a few extra names into the book as Adrian Nicholls and Brian Mulvey joined their team mate Declan Tiernan in the book after a yellow card each.
The first half loss to injury of the experienced defensive pairing of Declan Tiernan and centre back Declan Brennan left Cloone with a few holes to fill in their rearguard and in all honesty would prove to be the difference between the sides as Cloone never really managed to fill those gaps and Aughavas started to really grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
An first half injury time blitz from Aughavas with points for Niall McCabe and Sweeney was completed by a fine goal from Fintan Gallogly with the last kick of the first period and changed the entire perspective for both managers in their respective half time talks Aughavas flipping a 3 point deficit into a 2 point lead at the break.
Cloone down to the bare bones in the second half never really managed to reach the performance levels of the opening ten minutes again. Gavin Reynolds fought resolutely and kept the scoreboard ticking over for his side but Sweeney was equal and the game became a little more of a chess game with each relying on free kicks for most of the opportunities in the second half.
Aughavas managed to nullify all Cloone threats without every really putting themselves under pressure in the second half. Sweeney added three points while Sean McKieran, Niall McCabe and Colm Maguire all chipped in with the scores to keep that gap relatively consistent and finish with a four point lead as Cloone appeared to run out of ideas.
The entire parish of Aughavas appeared to celebrate with the Junior Championship trophy at the end of the game, but the club's main prize, a place in the 2021 Intermediate Championship campaign starts in just 3 weeks and the newly promoted side will be eager to give a good account of themselves in their new grade.

A fantastic diving mark from Niall McCabe gives him a scoreable kick from about 40 yards and he makes no mistake to put 5 between the sides. Aughavas 1-13 Cloone 1-08.
And it's that man again. Seamus Sweeney has been at the heart of everything good here for Aughavas. Another point after he gathers an effort blocked by a Cloone hand.
Another quick score for Aughavas as they start to put a bit of a gap on the scoresheet. Four points separate the two neighbouring clubs now with twenty minutes left on the clock.

3 Minutes added here in Avantmoney Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.

Just like buses, waiting ages for one and a second one comes along instantly. Seamus Sweeney scores his and Aughavas's second point in as many minutes. 1-4 to 0-2.
And Fintan McBrien's team are off the mark. A free kick from just inside the sideline at the scoreboard end get's Seamus Sweeney off the mark for the day.
A fortunate bounce on the rock hard surface evades the Aughavas defender as Damien O'Donnell takes possession and finds the target from 30 yards. Aughavas really struggling here and not able to take their chances.
Former county player Gavin Reynolds looks assured as he finds the target with his placed ball to put 6 points between the sides. 1-3 to no score.
