Down’s McKernan announces retirement

Down footballer Kevin McKernan has announced his retirement from county football following a 15-year career with the Ulster side.

Down followed up the news on their social media accounts earlier this evening. McKernan represented the Ardsmen on 170 occasions including 50 championship games.

The notice about McKernan’s retirement read,: “We wish Kevin McKernan all the best as he retires from intercounty football. He has been an exceptional servant for Down football in a distinguished career.

“Kevin’s commitment to the Down team was wholehearted, unwavering and borne of a desire to represent his county to the best of his ability.”

The half-back released a statement himself thanking those who have been involved and helped him along the way.

“I have loved every minute of a very special journey. I look forward to what lies ahead for me and Down GAA.”

He achieved Minor success in the All-Ireland in 2005 and an Ulster u21 title in 2008. He had the distinction of playing competitive football for Down against 30 counties and in 30 county grounds.

Down finished off their statement concluding with,: “we hope he enjoys his continuing career with Burren and time with his family, and we know he will have plenty to offer his club and county in time to come.”
